– Today we're really excited because this is the first
in our four part series of Breaking90. We're going to be taking
Josh over the next four weeks on a journey to hopefully breaking 90 for the very first time. We're going to be covering golf swing, on course stuff, short game, and in the final episode, we're going to play with him. And hopefully break 90. – Yes, indeed. If you want to see Josh on this journey over the next four weeks, make sure you subscribe and
hit that notification bell so you don't miss an episode. And also if you want to break 90, make sure you click the
link in the description because we've got the
coaching plan Break90, and we guarantee, guarantee,
that you will break 90.

So Josh, thank you so
much. We're really excited. – Me too. – We know that you're excited as well, which is just great to see. You've only been playing the
game for a few months now. – Yeah. Properly, yeah. – Unbelievable really,
how well you have done. But I asked this question earlier, what's stopping you breaking 90 right now? – Err a lot of short game,
and I can't hit a driver. So I'm hoping you guys can fix that, and not taking my medicine, I guess. – Well the first thing
we've looked at really with the driver, it's interesting because we've got a driver in there
which is an eight point five, regular shaft. So we need to look at
the driver a little bit, and maybe when we get you
on the golf course next time we can have something a
bit better for you to use. But we definitely need
to understand as well, what's going on with the golf swing, and the direction, and the
miss hits that you're getting, because at the moment you have
got a shot that goes right.

(all laugh) – Yeah. – You have got a shot that goes left, and obviously you can hit them
a little bit heavy as well, on shots the strike isn't quite there. (Josh agrees) – Okay, I'll tell you what,
we've got seven iron in hand, we've got flight scope. (claps hands) We can take some video as well. All right, let's hit some shots.

(golf ball hits) That one's a little bit left. What do you notice about that
shot when you hit that though? – I think it was kind of high, for me, and I end with my hands like up here, so I knew it was probably
going to go higher than a normal shot. – Okay. – I got snagged up on the floor. – A little bit ground before, but it went really high as well. Okay, cool. Let's hit a couple more. (golf ball hits) Speed and strength. – 146 Feet high that was. (laughing) Yeah that's high. (golf ball hits) – Again, nice strike. Did it feel nice that one? – Quite nice.

It's pretty straight as well. – Yeah yeah, really straight. – You said aim for that little fairway. (all laughing) – That's where you hit it exactly. – 148 feet again there. – Interesting, Andy. So this is the great thing with this. Josh swings his seven iron pretty much the same sort of speed
that me and Andy will when we we're playing, but he's probably losing
around about 20 or 30 yards, I noticed, because of
a few inefficiencies.

Let's go three iron, and we'll treat this like
it's on the tee as well. – Okay. – So you're actually going to use it. You gonna tee it up. – Yup. – With a small tee. We'll hit a few. We'll see what they do. (golf ball hits) – And again. – Okay. All right, I'll tell you what. (Josh laughs) We've seen what we need
here, which is good. – Yep. – So let's just show you
the golf swing first of all.

And what I'm going to do, there's a couple of things
I'm going to show you. First of all, which we're going
to come back to in a moment, is your grip. – [Josh] Yup. – [Pearce] The right-hand. So you can see your right
hand is quite a bit over, is what we would call a weak grip, which basically means
the face could be open. Then if we have a look
from this view here, the down the line, we'll see setups nice, posture is pretty good. If anything, it might be a
little bit on the toes too much. – [Josh] Right. – So you're a little bit
too forward on your toes. But as we see the club
when you swing back, you can see how you rotate. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Pearce] You open the face a lot. – [Josh] Yeah. – A lot of rotation. So that club face gets open throughout the whole back swing now. So what happens now? You need to make
compensations on the way down. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Pearce] So sometimes people swing it massively over the top. Now you're not doing that.

But what you are doing is you're having to rely
upon your hand speed. – [Josh] Right. – [Pearce] So basically, if I just jump in here and just show you. If you just jump round there
as well, you'll see this. When we have the face very open, and we have to try and square it up, look where my hands are now. So what I'm doing is I'm
creating a lot of loft on the shot, it's going to go really high, and I'm probably going to hit
the ground before the ball. – Right. Yeah. – So if we think about it, you doing this with your hands is causing you to have the face open, it's causing you to close the face when you over-exaggerate it. But it's also causing
you to hit very high, and hit the ground before the ball. – Right, got it. – So it's kind of like
one thing is causing a knock-on effect of
lots of different things. – Yeah. – So we kind of have to
see if we can change that.

– Yeah. And I think one of the key
things as well, everybody says, I just want to be consistent. Consistency is what I want. And look, Josh, we've seen
can hit an absolute bullet that's really nice, but the next one can be over there. The next one can be over there. So his bad shots are too
far away from the good ones.

And when there's so much
rotation of this face going on, it's hard to be consistent. So if this one change happens, it's going to make a massive difference. – Come and have a quick
look at this as well. So this is the grip change
we're going to do here. So we'll get in nice and close
so you can see this at home. So the right hand, yeah, the right hand was too much over there. That's great if you're
playing little lofty chips around the greens, flop shots, high shots. – Yeah. – We're going to get that right hand, and we're going to move
it round here a bit more. So actually, Josh, again, this is the great thing
with getting members from the website, there is a lot of education there already.

So he's saying he wants
the V to be up here by this right ear or right collarbone. Okay, cool. Right now the next move is, I'm not actually going
to do anything based- I'm not going to help you. – Okay. – I'm just going to get
you to swing back to here, but swing back how you think
the club should move back now, based on what you've just seen.

– Based on what I've just seen? – Yeah with the club face. Because I think you've
got an idea of this. So that's so much better. So normally we'd see
that that we'd have that. – Yeah. – That's loads better, but I almost wanted to
you to get the feeling of being a little bit more like this. – Okay. – And I know this is something
you may have played with a little bit before.

– Yeah. – We've got to really go with this. – That's fine. – Because you're not able to get it, correct it here, if that makes sense. – That's fine, yeah. – So let's go again. Beautiful. Now we want to make sure, we did this in the previous
lesson with Claire, that this is something
Claire was looking for, to get this position here, the club face. We just need to make sure we
still get a good hip turn, and a good torso turn (mumbles inaudibly). – Just for the guys at
home Pearce as well, what are we looking for in the face, in this first point as a checkpoint? – I mean really what we're
looking for at this first phase as the club goes back,
that you keep the club face pointing to the ball for longer.

But then by the time
we get to this sort of waist high position, you'll see here, we want this leading edge here,
the front part of the club. You want it running pretty much
parallel to the spine angle. In Josh's case. How was that? – So hard recover from there. – It's interesting isn't it? If I just said to you from there, just actually swing back to the
ball and square the face up. You've got to really wrap the hands. – Yeah, you've got to really go, yeah. – Yeah. Whereas if, let's do that again. I like that drill actually. Totally made up, never
done that one before. (Josh laughs) But this is where these things happen. Just let that relax. Now just bring that back in
to square it up to the ball.

Whole lot easier, yeah? – Yeah. – Hold a lot more. Yeah, there we go. A lot more passive and you'll find that the best players in the
world are a little bit more like this. My objective, really in his first few shots,
Andy we do this all the time, is to get the golf ball
to go a little bit lower, and a little bit to the left. If we can do that, then your
body is going to go hang on, I can wake up now and I
can start moving now, yeah? – It's going to make a huge
difference to Josh's game as well. We know he's got the speed. We know we've got the athleticism. But when the technique is out like this, such a simple change will make a massive difference on the dispersion. If you're struggling with your
irons and the consistency, check the face and just check the grip as it'll make a big difference.

– Beautiful, this is just mega. Okay. Let's do it with the erm. Just realized that we probably
don't want to be doing that with a three iron. (all men laugh) – I mean, he's working him
hard on the three iron. (men continue laughing) – Getting right-hand, I'm going to let you check that. Andy's going to be my eyes on that though. He's going to keep checking for it.

Very nice. Should we have a go hitting a shot? – Sure. – But what I'm going to do, I'm going to video it straight away so you can see how much
you actually do it. – Okay. – Because in our experience
you won't do it enough. – Okay. (laughing) – That's your challenge. Good to go. (golf ball hits) (Josh laughs) – Now we have to look at the shot, which was terrible, but that's okay. (Josh continues laughing) That's okay. – I was so concentrated on
that thing of when I come back, through I was just like. – [Pearce] Where's the
ball? What have I got to do? (Josh laughs) – [Josh] Yeah, I was just like. So wait? – [Pearce] I mean, it's an
amazing improvement to be honest. – [Josh] Oh, it was pretty good. Yeah. – [Pearce] Look how much better that is. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Pearce] It's still too much.

It's still open.
– [Josh] Okay. – [Pearce] But for your first shot. It still needs work at
the top of the backswing. – [Josh] Yeah, I flopped it, yeah. – But we have to just understand that this move here, I mean look. The thing is Josh has been playing golf only for a few months, but he does play six days a week. (Josh laughs) So he is playing a lot of golf. So you have ingrained the move somewhat. – I have yeah. – So we just need to un-ingrain it? – Un-ingrain it, yeah. I like it. – Knew me and my golf brain.

(men laugh) All right, off you go. So what are we going to do on this one? So we get you to swing back to there. Stop. Check it. Reset, and then hit, yeah? – Okay. – Okay. So do that for me again,. So swing back, stop and check. Good. Reset. And have a go on the shot. (golf ball hits) Okay. Not bad. Okay. Let's keep going
with that same mode. Good. You did that without even looking at it. Nice. Really good. (golf ball hits) Again, the thing is now your hands,
for want of a better phrase, have to be all over the place. (Josh laughs) – Yeah they are. – When it came to a golf shot before. Let's put this in here. Okay. Let's just make you a little station to make it a little bit easier. Why would I be putting
this here do you think? – It's to make sure I don't, well, I don't want to hit it basically. – Absolutely. Because at the moment, you're
hitting it a bit out the heel. – A bit out the heel, right.

– So we're just going to make
sure that we're missing that. We'll have a little
practice without the ball. So again, do your rehearsal. Nice. Start again. This time hit the tee peg
but don't hit the cover. (hitting sound) – (frustrated) Ah. – That's fine. – Okay.- All we've done is we've changed how the, and this is probably why
you found this hard before. – Yeah. – So we've changed the
motion of the club face. – Yeah. – But it's had other effects. – Yeah. – So we need to make sure that we just iron those out as well. – That's fine. – Okay. Rehearse. Beautiful. Do that again. Do it one more time. – I want to break wrist here, right? – I want you to ignore
that for the moment.

– Ignore that for now? – Yeah.
– Okay. – I only want you to focus
on this one simple thing. – It's interesting there as well, Josh. As soon as you went to break wrists, you went super open face. – Yeah. Does that make sense
Josh, what he just said there? So what Andy's saying is- – You went really brilliant, and then you broke the
wrist and open the face. – Yeah. (Josh laughs) – So we need you to, if we are going to break the wrists. – Yep. – We need to make, we want to work it out a bit more. – Right, that's fine. – Let's put a ball in here. Let's just see what we can
do with this move away then as it is with this change.

I'm going keep it- – Just out of interest as well, for you guys who are watching this, what is the one thing that is
stopping you from breaking 90? Is it driving? Is it irons? Is it short game? Is it putting? Let us know in the comments down below. (golf ball hits) – Oh, do you know what? Wasn't your best yet. But it's moving in the
right direction now. Go one more with this. – Yep. – And then we're going to. In fact, let me video this one. – Okay. – So we can just see where we're at. – I'll hit the best one then, yeah? (Josh laughs) – Yeah, this is the time
to hit the best one. Of course. – Yeah this is it. (men laugh) So is the grip good? You can tell me whether that's good? – Yeah it looks good. – Yeah there you go. That's good. – And then from there, good to go.

Love that. – Relax the arms when you do that. (golf ball hits) – What about that? Well done. (Josh laughs) That's good, that's good. – Not bad. – [Andy] It was a little lower. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Andy] It was 125 instead of 149. – [Josh] Oh nice. – [Pearce] So club face, you can see, we were after that checkpoint. Can we get it matching
up to the spine angle? If anything, can you check points? Sorry. In your little rehearsal drill. It's a little closed. – [Josh] Right. – [Pearce] Mega. Keep that. It still wants to rotate. Look it's still probably, it's not a correct angle, but it's 30 degrees better at least. (Josh agrees throughout) I am going to throw in another little bit of a move here. – Go on then. – Just for something to practice, because I know that you
do hit a lot of shots. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to get you to do
what we call a preset drill. – Okay. So what we've done is we've got the club. Is that good? – Yep. – Beautiful. So from here, this wrist is flat, yeah? – Yep.

– So what I'd like you to do
from here is to swing back, keeping that wrist flat. – Yep. Nice. Okay. Let's just do that a few times. – So preset here? – Preset here. And this, the key thing
is that that is good. Your face is good and
your wrist is pretty flat. And swing up. Good. – Yep. – Do that again. So set it. Well done. Figured it out. Let that relax a little bit. There we go. See how much more play you've
got in this right arm now, yeah? – Yeah. – Sometimes when we
were doing grip changes and face control, (inaudible). (men laughing and cross talk) It's easy done. All right. Swing up. Yeah, loads better. Here's the strange thing. Do you reckon you could
hit a shot doing that? – I'll try. – I think you could. I think you can. (Josh laughs) – See no idea why Sean's
starting to walk over there. (men laughing) – I know why. Most people as well are always trying to fix the bigger things that's
going on in the golf swing. If you've got some inconsistencies, check this first part of the back swing.

If you can start off in a good way, it makes things so much easier. This first part, especially with his club
face, don't overlook that. – I'm not saying you've
got to hit lots of shots with this drill. It's just a drill for you to feel how that wrist can actually work better. – Here or? – Lovely. – Yep. – Right arm relax. Okay. Have a go from there. (golf ball hits) Yeah. Very nice. – Yeah. – I think you'd get a handle
of that drill quite quickly. – Height on that one, the ones
earlier were like 149 feet. That was 115 feet. So big difference in height there. – Right, let's just have
a go taking the cover away and just hit some shots with this. (golf ball hits) – Yeah nice. Good. – So it's interesting, without going too much into this, before when Josh was hitting shots, his club was coming in quite level.

So it was actually almost
like you were driving almost. – [Josh] Right okay. (laughs) – [Pearce] Whereas on that one, because you've got the
face a little bit stronger, it's coming down steeper,
(Josh agrees throughout) which is something you're aware of, which just allows you to get
the ball and then the ground, which is what you did on that shot. – Right. (golf ball hits) – Still a bit. – A little haley, but not bad, not far off, not far off. The ball turfed that one, which was good. – [Pearce] So much better. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Pearce] So much better there. Look at that, when you hit the shot now. – [Josh] Yeah. – [Pearce] Loads nearer. Beautiful. – If that's the one thing that you do Josh over the next few weeks.
(Josh agrees throughout) That is going to have a massive difference on your consistency.
