Rory McIlroy Driving Tip
[intro music]

>>Brandon Tonkovich: Rory, obviously, you’re   well-known for how well you hit the driver. If
you don’t mind, kind of take us through where you   generate all that power.
>>Rory McIlroy: Yeah.
So, for me with the driver, you know, I think, you   know, how you set up – you need to have a real,
solid, stable base. I like to set up with my feet   probably a little wider than shoulder-width
apart.

Just really gives you a solid base,   especially if you are swinging this thing as
hard as you can. The wider you stand I feel   the more balance you’re going to have to stable
your bases and the more ability you’re going to   have to transfer that speed from the club into the
ball.
>>McIlroy: But, yeah, what I try to do is,   you know, I try to feel like everything goes away
as one, especially this sort of left arm and club.   I feel like that’s sort of like a straight
line and I sort of try to get a lot of width   in my backswing.

So, that’s the one thing. I mean,
obviously, it’s like a, you know, a fulcrum and a   pivot point. You, you know- the further away the
end of this is from the middle of your engine,   the more momentum it’s going to have on the
way down.
>>Tonkovich: Right.
>>McIlroy: So,   you know, I try to get a lot of width, sort
of try to really stretch my left flat and   keep my left arm extended. Obviously, I’ve
turned into my right side, into my right hip.   And then once I’m at the top, I mean, it really is
a shift onto my left side. I try to get all that   weight onto my left side as quickly as I possibly
can.
>>Tonkovich: Yeah.
>> McIlroy: You know,   so from here, bump to my left side – I sort
of pressure into the ground so that, you know,   I can then, you know, it’s a bit like a box
jump or a squat.

You’re really trying to put   force in the ground so that you can get
that force coming up through your legs,   you know, and the kinetic chain. So, for
me, what I like to feel to get speed is,   you know, once I get into that left side, I
get this left knee out of the way as quickly   as possible. And that means that my hips turn
quickly, my lower body turns quickly, and then   my upper body just acts like a whip all the way
through.
>>Tonkovich: Yeah.

>>McIlroy: And   it follows the lower body.
>>Tonkovich:
Absolutely. All right, great. Let’s see it.   Ooo.
>>McIlroy: Ooo.
