Hello. I'm Brian Fitzgerald The Golf Doctor. And today on Christmas Day. I'm going to share with you the biggest mistake
that I see most people make when it comes to gripping the golf club. Stay tuned. [MUSIC] So here we are on Christmas Day. Absolutely gorgeous time to spend Christmas
Down Under here. Nice sunny day. Ah I can only visualize what it's like in
the Northern hemisphere and my apologies to you. But one year I do hope to spend Christmas
in the Northern hemisphere and feel what it's like. So what's the biggest mistake I see most people
make when it comes to gripping the golf club? So whether they are left or right handed The
biggest mistake that I see. Is most people tend to grip the club in this
part in this first joint of their right hand if they are right handed. And it's in this joint here if they are left
handed. Ideally we want the club resting between those
two middle joints in the hand. So as I put my club down. Hopefully you can see there. That's in the middle joint. Most people get it in that first pad.
So when they get it in that first pad it feels
fantastic. And even to the point where they get their
hand on top and they say gee that's a good looking grip. My hands in the right position. Even though it looks like it's in the right
position it's too strong. So what happens from there is when I come
into the ball and if I release my hands correctly. I come into the ball and my clubface is probably
about somewhere between 5 and 8 degrees to the left.
Which means I am going to hit the ball with
big pull hook. And the brain is an amazing self adjuster. So it will get used to anything. So if it thinks you are going to hit the ball
left.It sends a signal down ok if I use my hands left so then it sends a signal down
I am going to start blocking as I come through and that helps square the club face.
The only thing is we lose power. We also tend to hit the top of the ball a
bit more and we also tend to hit it out to the right. We over do it and we hit it too far right. So all of this can be fixed by gripping the
club correctly. Whether you use the interlocking, the overlapping
or Vardon grip it doesn't matter. We still want that club resting across this
middle joint of my right hand. We don't want it in there. If it's left handed as I said before. We want it in the middle joint in that hand. Now a lot of people will pay a lot of attention
to where the "v"'s are pointing and they get that right. Unfortunately, they are still in the palm
of the hand and that doesn't work. So we have really got to get that in the right
position.
So once again we get that grip in the middle
joint We then get the fleshy part of my thumb over the top of my left thumb. Now I'm in the right position and from there
I can hit a good golf shot. No corrections needed. No adjustments required. So I am in the middle joint of my fingers. I am in the right position. And from there I can hit the ball with a nice
little soft draw. As easy as we like. So really pay attention to that grip. It is going to help you in 2018 and beyond. Thank you for letting me help you with your
