hi everyone it's michelle welcome to golf with michelle today i would like to take you through one of the fundamentals of golf which is how do we hold the golf club correctly and this is what we call the grip [Music] for beginners it's really important that you learn how to hold the club correctly and trust me it's the weirdest feeling ever but if you start practicing a little bit more you're gonna get used to it and for season golfers sometimes it could be a good checkpoint for you just to make sure that you don't get deviated from the basics so how do you hold a club has a big influence on the club face if you don't hold the club correctly it's not going to allow you to move the wrist nicely even your elbows or your body movements and you end up compensating on your body movements to send the ball where you actually want to hit it so if you have a good grip it's going to be a lot easier for you to hit better shots better impact and also the desired ball flight that you want so let's get going and we're going to start working on the grip and now we're going to start off with the technical part of the grip so this is what we call the leading edge over here and i would like for you to make sure that the leading edge is going to be straight at all time this is what we call a square club face and this is what we call open cut phase and a closed club face all right so you have to make sure that you grip the club with a square club face at all time okay when we get the square clock face i would like you to bring it straight down to the ground let it lay on the ground nice and flat okay okay now this grip is for right-handed golfers if you're a left-handed golfer just switch the hands around okay we're going to start off with the left hand all right for the left hand i would like you to have this part of your index finger the lower part of the index finger and this part below your pinky against the grip okay so it's going to look something like that okay i would like for you to have this part and this part against the grip and then i would like for you to wrap it with your fingers and then roll and then wrap your palm over so at this point this v over here will point up the right armpit and you should be able to see two knuckles from the top at this position i want to make sure that you don't stretch out the thumb on the grip like this i like for you to have it up a little bit so you're going to feel a little bit of a gap in here okay that would be a good left hand grip there's also a couple ways to check if you're holding your left hand grip correctly okay i like for you to straighten your arm over here and then i'll let you to hinge your left hand up if you can hinge it up nicely with a square cloth face that's a correct grip but some of us we have what we call a strong grip which we have our palm a little bit more on top of the grip over here if we straighten out our arm and try to hinge over here you can see that the club face a little bit shut and this will cause the ball to go to the left okay so okay if i have my hands too much under the grip which is what we call a weak grip and i bring my arm straight out and i try to hinge it it's going to be really hard to hinge and then if i twist my wrist and hinge it like how we normally hinge it you can see the club face is open and it will cause the ball to go to the right most of the time all right so that's a few checkpoints for the left hand and now we're going to move on move on to the right hand grip so the right hand is a little bit more simple so again i like for you to grip the club nicely for your right hand i like for you just to be really relaxed i can see that i'm just hanging my right hand from my shoulder and i'm gonna have you put this part of your palm against the grip okay so just really relax and put the part under your fingers against the grip and just wrap your fingers around it okay this is going to be a good right hand grip and then there's a few checkpoints as well number one is this v points up the right armpit as well and then i like for you to straighten your hand and at this time we're gonna hinge the club this way okay we have to make sure when we hinge the club the club face is square so again from this angle lift my hand straight up hinge the club should be a square club face all right so if i have too strong of a right hand grip which is our hand a little bit too under the grip you can see if i bring my hands out all right and i try to hinge it the club face will end up too close and the ball will go left okay and then if i have too weak of a right hand grip which is my palm on top of the grip over here straighten my arm i'm going to try to hinge the club and you can see the club face is way open over here and this will cause the ball to go to the right side so it's really important that you grip the club correctly okay all right when we get our left hand grip and right hand grip sorted out there's three ways to hold the club all right right here we have what we call the ten finger grip and then this is what we call the interlock grip and this is what we call the overlap as long you can move the wrist freely hit the ball good and hit solid shots that's totally fine okay any way you want to hold it okay when we get everything sorted out i'm going to show you three different kind of grip which is what we call the neutral grip the strong grip and the weak grip okay the neutral grip is going to be something like that two knuckles this v point on my right shoulder okay and my v on my right hand points up the right shoulder as well and then what i called a strong grip is my left palm is too much on top of the grip and my right palm is under the grip okay this is what we call a strong grip and then for the opposite this is what we call the weak grip okay and now i'm going to show you how this grip can affect the backswing right from this angle i'm going to use a neutral grip right now okay for the neutral grip if you look at the top over here my hand my palm over here is somewhat flat okay and my right hand is just supporting the club nicely and the club is pretty square at the top all right and if i have a strong grip okay and when i take it to the top you can see the club face a little bit shut and my wrist is a little bit too cupped over here all right this will sometimes cross the ball go to the left side and then if i have too weak of a grip and then when i take my back swing you can see that my hands will be a little bit too bold and the right hand just looks a little bit weak you know there's not much wrist action over here and sometimes the ball will go to the right from this angle okay for seasoned golfers i don't recommend you to change the grip right away unless you know that you're definitely swinging on the right path you're hitting the ball great but the grip is affecting the direction of the ball then you can consider changing your grip but for beginners i would like for you to make sure you hold the club and grip the club correctly from the beginning all right guys that's all i have for the group today i hope you guys enjoyed the video and you managed to get something out of it if you do have any questions please leave me a note and i'll get back to you as much as i can see you guys in the next video thank you very much
