Hello my friends, you know the cars aren't quality anymore My Golf Mk 1 needs after 32 years already new shock absorbers for the front Of course I'll replace the shocks at both sides, thus I'll jack the whole front But before, I loosen the wheel bolts Remove the nice plastic caps Just loosen, we'll remove them after jacking the car After jacking, remove the wheel And away with the little wheel Remove the cap, but don't loosen the central nut Doing so, the spring might jump though the garage. VERY DANGEROUS! We are going to remove the whole strut Rather easy after 30 years Only loosen, otherwise the strut drops down The lower bolt is only holding the strut, the upper is for adjusting the camber angle Mark the excenter bolt for having later a starting point for the adjusting the camber angle Remove the brake hose from the strut Loosen the 2 nuts Up, at the excenter bolt you have to take care with the order of the pieces First is a normal washer, than the excentric washer and you can remove the bolt Support the strut with a jack What a nice jack Remove the nuts now The upper side is free The last bolt should go out, too And we have the strut, a little rusty after 32 years Remove the strut For disassembling the strut you'll need a spring tensioner I fixed the tensioner in the vice I compress the spring until the shock absorber comes free The spring is compressed such strong, that the shock absorber is freely moveable For opening the central nut you'll need special tools Inside you need a 7mm Allen key, a "common" size and you need a long open socket with 22mm Counter with the Allen key and loosen the nut And it is loosened After loosening, it is easier to work with a box end wrench This have been the central nut Remove the strut bearing The washer is placed here The upper spring mount Separate the shock absorber from the spring Here is a washer, remove the protection For this special nut exist a special tool, but you may use a adjustable pin wrench This old shock absorbers aren't hermitic closed When removing the nut, the oil will come out Put the oil pan under it With a little impact you may pull the bar out The new shock absorbes are hermetic closed It is just placed inside the old housing and does the same work The new shock absorber comes in the tube And it is centered by this cap, mounted with a punch on the shock absorber You see the new cap fits perfectly Why the cap isn't mounted in the factory, I don't know, maybe it is different at another model Put the shock absorber in the housing And it is hold by this nice nut Fortunately we need no pin wrench, but a 54 mm open-end wrench This monkey wrench is for people with fine motor skills The old protection boot was a little shorter, it ended here The new boot reaches here, but that doesn't matter Connect the parts Put the boot on the shock absorber and add the washer Insert the shck absorber in the spring The spring has a stop here Mount the upper spring cap Take care when mounting the strut bearing, replace also the spacer sleeve Mount the strut bearing and a new lock nut Fasten the nut Fasten the nut with 60 Nm Release the spring tensioner The strut is ready for assembly Thread in the preassembled strut and push it upwards When the bolts enter, mount the nuts Put the washer and mount the nut Here it is fixed, I'll mount the lower end now That's a starting point As always, a tender blow with the hammer is helpful The hole for the bolt is at its place Mount the excentric bolt from the rear side At the front comes the excentric washer, than the washer and the nut Turn the bolt to align it to the old mark, this is the base for the later adjustment Fasten the upper nut When the excentric bolt is in place fasten the lower bolt The bolts here are extremly long Fasten the nuts of the strut bearing with 20 Nm and also here 20 Nm Mount the plastic cover, the upper side is fine now The torque for the bolts is 80 Nm, quite a lot, but the whole car stays on them and we reached 80 Nm The same with the lower bolt – 80 Nm Place the hub cap, before mounting the last bolt Fasten the bolts as much as possible with the car being on jacks Mount the holder of the brake hose Fasten the wheel bolts in a cross pattern with 90 Nm I'll drive the car a little, and then I'll have to adjust the camber angle How to this, you may see in the separate video Thus the video ends for you here.
Bye bye, see you in the next video.
