this, what we would say, there's no perfect golf swing. Everybody is different but what we've identified
over the years of coaching is amateurs tend to make
very similar mistakes, especially when it comes to iron shots. So we're gonna share with
you some real simple things that will definitely help you today. So Piers, let's get into the
first thing, the first tip. Ball position. Everybody asks where
should the ball position be with an iron? Just talk through us that. – We get asked this all the time. So let's just make this as simple, to be as consistent as possible for you. So we've got a little
station going on here. We've got an alignment stick, which is running 90 degrees
to your target line.

We've got three golf
balls to the left of it. So what we're going to do we're going to place your lead foot against these three golf balls. Now this area here will not move. You're not going to move
anything at all in this area. So the left foot stays in the same place. And all we're going to
do is we're going to move our right foot depending
on the length of the club. So if you've got a short
iron in your hands, you'll notice I've got a narrow stance. Where the golf ball is
now positioned pretty much in the middle of the stance.

Now, when we go to a medium iron, we just widen the stance a little bit. So as we do that, then
the ball effectively moves further forward
from the middle line. And then if we have a
long iron, you guessed it we just move it away again. And again, you can see now that golf ball is further forward in the stance. So it's a real, consistent,
simple way of doing it. All you have to think about
is moving your right foot. – So you're not changing the ball. You're really just changing
really the width of your stance. And this is a great thing
that you can do on the range just as practice this and just shift between
short, mid, and long irons. Okay. – So simple. – Right. Let's just go through them. First of all Piers, the move away. The move away, if we can
get off to a good start. If we know it can really
have a massive impact, a knock on effect on the golf swing. Let's talk us through the
first point, which is key. – So the first point is we want to get a connected move away.

So by that we mean that we want the arms working with the torso
as you move the club back. Areal good way to feel this
is to get your right hand, stick it underneath your armpit, make sure you have a wash before. And then from there,
I'm gonna move the club back now, with a turning
motion of my body. Not with independent movement like this. As soon as we do this,
we're disconnecting it. We're doing it all with our arms. – Just do that again Piers? Look at the face as well. Our face is wide open. That's definitely a death move and there's no torso
movement at all there. – And we see golfers do
this as the first move. And obviously from there you're gonna have to play catch-up. So again, get that armpit
locked into the body and get that club moving with the body. That's a real good way of doing this. – Really simple. Okay. Now we mentioned the face Piers. Let's talk about the
face in this move away, another key component. – Indeed. So just come round
here and have a look at this.

Cause this is so important. So we're talking about a checkpoint here. We've got the leading
edge of the golf foot. So that front line at the
front of the golf club there. Now with that leading
edge, what we want to do, by the time the club shaft
is parallel to the ground. We want that leading edge
matching your spine angle. So that tells us the club face is square. We've got a real good chance from here. If you over-rotate it and open it or under rotate and close it, then you can be in big trouble. So again, from here, a
checkpoint using a mirror. Me and Andy do this all the time. Get that leading edge matched
up to your spine angle. – Hold it there and you can see still from the front on, Piers
is still engaging the torso. He's got this connected move away and he's tied it into the club face.

He's on now to a great swing already because he's getting
all the Peters in place and it's going to make a big difference. – And sometimes this
is as much as you need actually to perfect your iron swing. So let's have a go hit and one Andy. Ball position good. Little practice of the movement- – What have you got here by the way? _ I've got seven iron here Andy.

– Seven iron. So you've got, sort of mid iron here. – Feel like I'm aiming a little
bit left, actually that flag but middle of the green is
probably a good place to go with a seven iron. – [Andy] Little chunky on that one. – [Piers] Maybe I need to do
some work on my back swing. – [Andy] Well, it's a good job. We're going to the top of the backswing and then the down swing. (laughs) So look, there's the move
away, really important part. If that's helpful, make
sure you hit the like. I know you guys, some of you
will be struggling with that. So let us know in the
comments, if that is helpful. Okay. Let's go into the next phase. Completing the backswing. I think you need to
about a shot in that one.

You need to dig yourself out. – It was crap, basically. – So what's the next part? – Okay. So now we want to talk about how we may use the
wrists in the back swing. So from here as we move back, this is a real good checkpoint. Again, using your mirror or video camera. When your lead arm is
parallel to the ground, we wanna feel as though
there's a 90 degree angle or there is a 90 degree angle between the shaft and the forearm. If you have that there, you're
getting a good move away and then you're setting the wrist and then that just allows
you then to carry on and complete the backswing. Basically what we see when it goes wrong is that some golfers don't
get enough wrist set. And then they do all this sort
of stuff into the back swing. Very rarely we'll see
someone who gets too much, but that can happen. So this is just a really good,
solid checkpoint for you.

– It's a great guide to keep
everything working together in sequence, which sort
of sets you up again for a good down swing. – Right. Hips now. So next thing is the hips. And this is probably, in our mind, if you can control your
hips in your iron play it really is probably
the most important thing. So what we're looking for if you imagine there's a
line going on the outside of my right leg, we talk about
this sway line all the time. Now, what we want you to do is
we want you to turn your hips so that your hips and your
legs stay on that line or even move a little
bit in from that line. That's absolutely fine to do. So in fact, if you just come
round here with the camera. We'll use this one here and we'll have a look around here as well.

So if I actually turn back, now you can see I've got a good hip turn but my right leg has
straightened somewhat. A little bit of straightening of that leg, is absolutely fine. It really does help you to
get that good hip action. What we don't want to see is a hip action where you don't turn and
you sway through that line. That is death. That's probably what I did
on that first one Andy. – I think so. – Must have done. – Well let's let's put that into action. Let's see if we can get a
crisper strike on this Piers. You're warm up ones were
so much better than that.

– They were. weren't they. Little bit nervous cause the camera's on. – I know you can, yeah exactly. A bit of pressure, but that's fine. – Yeah. Here we go. All right. So watch out for that hip
action and that wrist set now. Much better. – [Andy] Beautiful
strike, lovely ball turf. Definitely not a heavy one there. – [Piers] That's slightly,
about six inches better. – Much better. Okay. Let's get into the down
swing then again, real key. Now we've primed our back swing. Ready to produce this down swing. Let's talk about what we need at impact. – Okay. So here's a really
good way of you imagining this.

So we spoke about obviously
the line on the leg there. What we want now is a
vertical line coming up from the outside of the foot. Now it's almost like a wall. And you can actually practice
this at home against the wall. I wouldn't hit shots against the wall, but you can practice this move. Because what we're after is when you get to the top of your backswing we want you to move and
turn towards that wall.

So you can see I'm actually getting on that wall quite early. Now, as a result of this now I continue to turn, continue to turn. I'm still on the wall. And you can see now that
the shaft is lent forward which I didn't do on the
first shot, obviously. And then from there it's going to allow me
to hit the golf ball. And then the ground is
going to get that low penetrating ball flight. And this is gonna be
a lot more consistent. – Key part here is, now Piers, his whole left side is against the wall.

Left shoulder, left hip,
left knee, left ankle. Everything would be against that wall which means it's going to
enable him to get this ball, followed by the turf, which
most people struggle with. Most people Piers, are
behind that, aren't they? They look at impact and
they're a little bit away from the wall. – We hear golfers saying,
they're trying to hit it up in the air and trying
to lift it up into the air. That's exactly what you don't want to do.

We need to get down onto that lead side so we can actually lean that
shaft forward and crunch it at the target. – I like it. So let's crunch another one then. You've hit one good one, one semi-bad one. I'm kind to you there. – Semi-bad one. I like that. That's the kindest thing
you've ever said to me. – Okay, come on let's dig you out again. – Okay. – That was nice. And you can see Piers finished there fully on that left leg. I didn't see the result. – Yeah, it's down the left-hand side.

I've got a wind here now, but
that was a beautiful strike, wasn't it, again? Loved that one. – There we go. If that is useful you're gonna love our five shots lower video series. It's free, click the
