– Welcome to episode three of Breaking 90, where we're taking Josh on a journey to hopefully breaking 90 in four sessions. We've looked at his golf swing. We've looked at him
out on the golf course. Today we're going to help
him become a great putter. – And make sure you never miss another episode of Josh breaking 90. Hit the subscribe button and
hit that notification bell so you don't miss those episodes.
And if you want to break 90, click the link in the description and we'll show you exactly how with our amazing video
series coaching plan, should I say. Right. Josh? – Yes. – How's it going? We've seen you twice. – Yeah.
– You've played some golf, how's it going? – It's going good. It's
better than before. Still a lot of putting practice
needs to happen in time. Yeah, because a three
putting is depressing when you get there in.
Two on a par five, or
you put it on the green on par three and then
you just depressing me, I mean, three puttings. – Walking off a bogey. – Yeah, no, you really
shouldn't be doing that. So. – And this is crucial. Really? Look, if you're looking to break 90, you should really be
looking at your putting cause there's so many quick
gains that you can make from this. So we've actually got a game set up here so we can see we've got five golf balls and they are one big
pace away from the hole, each position of the golf balls there. You'll also see we've
got an alignment stick behind the hole there, again
that's a pace behind the hole. Now the objective for Josh is here that he needs to play this
game with all five golf balls and shoot level par.
So he needs to be level par or better in order to complete this game. So if he hits the golf ball in the hole, he gets the birdie, one under. If he hits anywhere between
the hole and short of the alignment stick, then it's a par, if he is short of the hole
or hits the alignment stick, it's a Bogey. – Makes sense? – Yeah yeah. – Shall we have a go? – Yeah go for it, yeah. – Okay right, well go. Andy's gonna do some videos
on the stroke as well. – I love this game, we
call this the ladder drill, but it's a great game to
just work at your pace and see how you're doing there.
– Big pie. It's a big
part of bright 90 as well. So it's, it's in the coaching plan. Nice. So he's one under. – Strong start. – Two under
– Two under. – There nothing wrong with his putting. – Stop. – Lucky. – No. – Back to one. – That's a bogey. – Often happens as a
reaction to the first one, – Oh please.
– Back to level par. – He's adding the pressure
the last one, drama. – It's always the best
one, the last one is. Not enough, not enough. – I think that probably sums
up your putting doesn't it? – Yeah it does, yeah yeah. – I mean, it's a, it's interesting that a great start, and then it kind of like, fell apart. Okay, so I'm- the videos as we thought Andy? – Yep.
– Okay, perfect. So we'll show you the video in a moment, – Yup sure. – But basically what is happening if you can just get around
here so you can see this. Basically what is happening when you're hitting your putts, your backs, backswing length
is pretty much the same, whether it's the first
one or the last one. – Uh. – So what you are doing
then is you are having, it's your effort level then, which is determining the length
of the putt that you hit. So it goes back very
similar on the distance, on the way back, and then
it's the effort level on the way through. And it does, it kind of makes
sense that the backswing length for these first two
was actually pretty good. – Okay. – And the through swing length
was actually pretty good. But then as you went over here, you were then having to rely on your energy and force on the way through.
So what we prefer to do
is we would prefer to, as we go further from the hole, we prefer to lengthen out the backstroke and almost feel that back
and the through stroke are the same distance back and through. – Okay. – Then it allows you to have like a, it will feel- each putt will almost
feel the same as far as effort level's concerned. – Right. – But it will be the backswing length that actually creates the speed. – And notice these two
were pretty, pretty simple.
– Yeah. – We've got a fairly close putt as we go further and further away, it just started to go off there. – Yeah. – Because then we're
not really allowing the, length to control the speed. And if we do that and look, if you're struggling to break 90, there is a good chance
that you are doing this. Most people who come to us for coaching who were in that above 90 bracket, they don't change the length
of the back swing and have to then rely on this over acceleration. And it's just hard to
judge pace like that. – And this is something that
we just see all the time. So what we would do in this
instance here is maybe we just hit a few where we go
at this last position, which is a struggle for you.
– Yeah. – And we just have a few practice
strokes where you feel as though you have a slightly
longer back swing. – Okay. – You're probably gonna hit
them too hard to start with potentially, but I have
a few practice swings, just the sides here and just
feel as though the backswing length is a little bit longer. And almost you're trying to
understand how it feels to match up the length of the stroke, – Right. – But get a nice tempo on it as well. – Okay. – The tempo depends on
the person can be fast, it can be slow, it really
does depend on the person. We just want to match up.
– Yeah definitely. And I think when you do this as well, you almost just imagining the ball just gets in the way of the stroke, what Josh would normally
do on these longer ones, because he has a short back swing. (hitting sound on hands) He then asked to hit the golf
ball to get the distance. So if we can allow the
putter to swing back, that's going to create the
momentum and the speed. So then we can just allow it
to just smoothly stroke the ball rather than to hit the golf ball. So it'll take a bit of time to do this, but this is now just
ingraining the feel of this and trying to get used to
change in the back swing.
– Once you've had a couple
of sessions on this, it really start to get a
lot better, quite quickly. – That was nice. And
that's a good putt luck. – Yeah yeah. I'd be happy with that. – Well you would have won the game if you did it in that time. (laughter) – That's have a go again at that. And we'll do a video on this
maybe under you as well, just so we can see the difference
on your phone if we could.
– When we saw Josh on the golf
course on the last episode on one sport if you haven't seen it, what we would see, that the
practice stroke really wasn't, there was nothing there,
no purpose to the stroke. There's no purpose to
that practice stroke. When we do the practice stroke, it's very much want to get
into the feel of things judging and sort of understanding
what sort of length stroke is going to produce the shot. Whereas before he would just do this, sort of waggle the putter around a little. – We'll have to practice. – If you want a faster tempo that's fine, it just needs to
be short back short through, but that's okay to do. – Yeah. – But if you want a
smoother, slower tempo, then it needs to be longer on
the way back.
And that's fine. We always like to put people
into that longer backswing and then just see how they feel. – The good thing about this as well, which is what I liked Josh, is that now what are you tuning into? – Beautiful. – You're tuning into the feel of the shot. – Yeah. – So when you have a practice stroke now, there's a purpose to it – Yeah. – Because you're going, what, what do I need, what do I
need to produce this distance? And when you come to do this game again, you'll be highly tuned into that. So what'd you say that
was a stroke or a hit? – That was a hit. – Okay. – Cause I sped up maybe
on my way through again. – And that's your usual
pattern because you're short. – It is yeah. – You see, so you've got to create this, this smooth stroke where
the ball gets in the way. – So what you're doing there
in your practice stroke just replicate exactly the same. And then we'll get feedback
on whether it's good. That was much better. – Very nice.
Greens are fast aren't they? – There are fast. I think some people,
well I say some people, a lot of people say, well, how far back
should I take the putter? It all depends on you. It depends on the greens that you're on, but all you need to understand
is, If you have a pattern where you are short and then accelerating, depending on the length
that you have of putts, it's never going to be that consistent.
So by doing something like this, we're going to reign in that consistency. And all you need really is just a little bit of
time spent doing this. – Yeah. – Are we having another go Andy? – I think so. I think we should do this – This is harsh straight away. – I think so. Well, the thing is that we
may have two goes at this, – Okay. – The thing is with this now, Josh, when we go through this now
you're all your focus is now is purely on feel going, Is this length of stroke going to produce the distance that I need? And as long as it varies,
each time you go back, – Yeah.
– You'll have this awareness now and you're tuning into that. – Do you want to video any of these, or are you just going
to go on the last one? – Let me video this again. – Yeah maybe go first and last. – First and last one again, yeah. – Okay. – Pace was good though. Pace was good. – Yeah good. – Pace was good. – We almost would prefer
you to get five pars here. That would be, that would
tell us that you really got your pace dialed. – Nice. Again pace was good. – Now the good thing
about this as well, Josh you have feedback. – Yeah. – Anytime you hit a shot, you go, well did I swing long.
Did I accelerate you? You'll learn as you go do this. – These are the ones. These are the ones where
you gotta tune in now. – Just concentrating on the pace. Not even the line or
putting it in the whole. – That's all its about. Remember the backswing has
to vary to produce the speed. – Yeah. – Yeah, there you go. Feedback on that one? – That was a hit. – A little short and it hit good.
– It was yeah. – Good but just see how
we asked Josh that there. And he'd got that feedback because he knows the difference now. – Very nice. Very nice. – Perfect. – Sounds better. So much better. The ball just got in
the way of the stroke. The stroke was longer.
I mean, that's just, just a different class. – That sir is your training for the, – That's fine. – For the net for the next week. – On the putting greens. – Next week is the final one
to see if he can break 90, but we're going to have a good game out here on the golf
course at the Aspirin.
