Hi, I'm Brian and I'm pretty excited to be sitting here with a Micro Freak, and to be able to show you what it's capable of doing. Let's get straight into it. Micro Freak is a powerful creative synthesizer with an advanced digital multimode oscillator. Here are the different types : Basic waves oscillator, Super wave oscillator, which is a digital waveform animator that creates copies of a waveform and detunes them. Wavetable oscillator, this scans through a waveform which consists of short snippets called samples. A harmonic oscillator, The Karplus strong module, A pair of classic waveforms which is an emulation of the classic synthesizer waveforms. Triangle, sawtooth and square waves. A wave shaping oscillator which is a combination of a wave shaper and a wave folder. Two operator FM, The granular formant oscillator, Chords, Vowel and speech synthesis, and the modal resonator.
For each oscillator type we've selected three parameters that you can use to modify the basic sound. Wave, timbre and shape. What these parameters do will depend very much on the oscillator type. But looking at the display will help you understand what the knobs do. Turn a parameter knob and the display will tell you what is being changed. What makes it musically exciting is that you can select each of these parameters as a modulation destination in the matrix. Animating the parameters using the matrix will make your sounds come alive in unexpected and fascinating ways. The filter is a pure analog state variable filter. Although the oscillator is digital The filter adds that recognizable analog sound. There are three types of filter, a low-pass, a bandpass and a high-pass filter. The type button lets you switch between the filter types. Tweak the filter and resonance to change your sound. The voltage controlled amplifier has an amp mod on or off switch. When the amp mod switch is active the loudness of the VCA will be controlled by the envelope.
The Micro Freak isn't just a monophonic digital synthesizer. It can be switched to a four-part paraphonic mode. This means instead of playing one note at a time, you can play four notes simultaneously. Let's choose a string preset, switch on paraphony and listen back. The amplitude of each voice can be different on the Micro Freak, which is not possible on most paraphonic synthesizers. You might call the Micro Freak paraphony a form of extended paraphony. This is just a sneak peek to show what Micro Freak is capable of. The great thing about it is that it's very easy to use just dial up a preset and play, or if you want to get creative there are tons of features under the hood. Watch the rest of the series to see how you can get wild and creative with the Micro Freak..
