are hybrid irons actually any good this is the question i hear quite a lot when i see people looking at changing from a more traditional typeset and maybe looking at change into one of these hybrid sets and so that's why we're here today to find out exactly how much different these hybrid sets are to a more normal type of set the hybrid clubs come out in the early 2000s and as the name suggests they're a cross between an iron and the wood and they were developed for the main purpose of just being a lot easier to hit than the long guy in especially with that delofted phase it just made it a lot easier to get in the air for people maybe with a bit of a slower clubhead speed and so as time went on as these hybrids become more and more popular some people that maybe struggled hitting the mid-irons or even the low irons and getting them up in the air this is what these hybrid iron sets are made for and this should just make life a lot easier if you do struggle hitting your irons they do look quite weird though and that is one of the downsides to these like to me it just looks like it would be really hard to get underneath the ball properly and that's something that i've always struggled to get my head around especially when you're comparing that to lower down in the set like even looking at the sandwich and there's quite a big difference between that and a normal eye and that is kind of where you're gonna see it the most so it took a seven iron down to the drive range just to see how easy or how difficult it was to get up in the air straight away i noticed something after hitting this now normally when i'm hitting my 7-9 i would probably play it somewhere around middle of the stance i like to hit down into the back of it like most people do but doing the same thing with that it just didn't feel right now part of that might be because i was playing off the map but it just felt like because there was so much club underneath the actual face it was just bouncing off the top of the map i started playing it from the front of my stance like a wood with a three to a four hybrid and i tell you what that made a huge difference and it was just a lot easier than to get a proper strike on it it was definitely getting a much better flight on it i was a bit concerned at that point though because they seem to be going upwards more than it was going forward so i thought i was losing quite a lot of distance from that now the feel off these i'm not going to beat around the bush it was pretty grim it wasn't that pleasing to the eye either when i was setting it down behind the ball it wasn't that great to look at but the level of forgiveness that i was getting off this club is probably more forgiveness than i ever tested on any other iron before but to get a proper idea of the numbers coming off these i then took them inside onto the monitor but i hit 10 shots as usual with each one now the big difference between like just these two sets is the actual head size and also a rife set that does this hybrid style and they're even bigger and those are the biggest hybrid sets that i've found and i guess it just depends on how much forgiveness you want and how big you're willing to go when you're setting up behind the ball now interestingly i was actually hitting the bigger head a lot better and it just felt a bit nicer with the wilson than it did compared to the cobra well they both seem to be doing the job that they were supposed to and just getting quite a nice high launch on them somebody that's pretty much always played quite a big draw as a stock shot shape i've always found it difficult to hit a fade and especially with a hybrid so with these i was battling to keep it from not going too far left and that's also kind of what hybrids are designed for so i mean if you do struggle with hitting quite a big fader with quite a big slice then and these are another thing that's going to help with that so let's take a look over the numbers and just see if we were getting any more height on these ions the main thing with these clubs that we were wanting to look at which is the launch and the height is actually pretty similar and actually not that much different to a normal iron in furnace both launching exactly the same on average and they're both coming down at exactly the same angle on average but wilson did have fraction higher peak height by two yards which was probably down to having a much more quick ball and club speed which was just giving it that extra power to just climb that bit higher now even though wilson was going higher and a bit further the kirby was spinning quite high even compared to like other clubs i've tested in the past it was actually spinning quite a lot and for the most part both were averaging pretty decent dispersion and went sort of straight offline too much so what we were seeing between the two is probably mostly down to the head size more than anything the overall height between these two though and like a normal set that i would normally be using like with most of the numbers actually looking pretty average but we'll say that these two just felt a lot easier to do that like it was just a lot easier to hit and the forgiveness though that is the main difference and that's the main thing i've noticed with these is just they're just so much more forgiving than anything else i've tested we put these into my leaderboard up against all the other irons that i've previously tested in the past they don't place that great to be honest and the wilson was a bit higher up than the cobra but this leaderboard takes everything into consideration so it's like an overall score because the looks of it can obviously change that quite a lot so in my opinion not the best looking clubs that's why i've had to score them one however it doesn't show just how forgiving these clubs are like these clubs are just on another level to any other of the clubs on this list the end result being that if you want something that's just really easy to hit possibly maybe get the ball launching a bit easier in the air mainly if you're just after something that's going to give
