– [James] I'm like new to
VR. I'm trying this out. I'm like also legally blind. So, I have 5% of sight and I've always been terrible at tennis. – [Shuman82] You're either
bluffing me right now. – I'm literally not. Did you know blind and
visually impaired people, access technology and entertainment through a variety of
accessibility features found in smartphones, computers, video content, and even video games. I've covered many of these
features and experiences over the years. But one thing I've not kept
up with is the current state of virtual reality.

Over the years, a common
question I've gotten is can I experience VR? Like I said, oh gosh, I'm legally blind. Which means, yes, I can
see some things like light, lots of light. I'm gonna put these on. All right, cool. (hands clapping) Like any disability,
blindness is a spectrum. All 350 million people living
with a visual impairment may experience it differently. In my case, everything
in my view is blurry, shaking and overexposed
in brighter environments. I happen to be nearsighted though. Meaning if something were
to come inches from my face, I have a better chance at identifying it. And that's why I'm a bit
more optimistic here. Maybe since virtual reality headsets are so close to the eyes, could I actually see better there than I do in the real world? I'll be using the Meta Oculus Quest 2 to discover just how accessible
are virtual reality games for someone like me with
less than 10% of sight.

I'll be diving into four different titles. And after each play session, I'm going to rate them based
off my experience and ability to play as a legally blind gamer. These titles include 11
Table Tennis, Beat Saber, GOLF+ and The Thrill of the Fight. I also asked you to send me
questions on my Instagram and Twitter, what you want
me to cover in this video. So, I'm making sure all
that's answered. Cool. So, I've learned the menu a bit here. I don't know what any of this says.

I don't know what this says. I can't read. The issue here is Beat Saber, some menus, so like my Oculus menu, right? I can walk closer to it, which is great. 'Cause that allows me to be
like, okay, that says quit. That says resume Beat Saber. And I can kind of make out
these icons a little bit better. I can also pick this up and move it and serve my play space. (upbeat music) ♪ Tonight I'm so ♪ – I'm just gonna go into this. (Billie Eilish singing) Now for me, color is accessible. ♪ Wasting my breath 'cause you only ♪ – So, I can see color. ♪ I don't relate to you ♪ – So, I know that this is orange or yellow and this is like a black or gray.

♪ Treat me this ♪ I need a hit. ♪ You made me hate this city ♪ ♪ And I don't ♪ – Now, normally depth perception isn't the most accessible thing for me, 'cause I don't really
have depth perception in like the real world, but I have a little bit more

really impressive in this. ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh ♪ I'll be rating these
titles one outta five stars based on how accessible
and enjoyable they were. One star being the least and
five stars being the best.

The one thing I can make
out is this giant D I got, that was my rank. I don't think that's very impressive, but I think it's like progress, right? I wish all the fonts in UI were as big as this fourth
anniversary of Beat Saber. Beat Saber's been around for four years and you still can't make a more accessible visually larger UI as an option? Huh. When menus again are just large
or up to my face, it's good.

And developers, I have to
kind of rely on you to do that because not all games are made equal. Beat Saber for instance,
Beat Saber is like, if you haven't heard of it,
you probably haven't heard much about VR applications in general. Beat Saber is like the premier game demo for how cool VR can be. I couldn't see the menu. The problem there was I
couldn't walk closer to the menu and I couldn't pull a menu closer in. The menu was at a static distance from where I'll always be looking. So, even if I walk closer, the menu is going further away from me. Beat Saber, it's fun, it's a great time once I can
actually get into the game and find where I'm at. Beat Saber's a ton of fun with
customization for gameplay, but it suffers from tiny unreadable menus and no text-to-speech narration option.

When you first boot up the game, you'll find that there's a
lackluster music catalog, unless you're willing
to buy more song packs. Although I'll play more, as of now, I can't rate this any higher than a two outta five. Okay, while that's installing though, I wanna show you some of
the accessibility settings. And so from the quick settings I can access the normal settings. I also have the brightness down. The brightness is adjustable. I also have night shift on too. So, the voice commands
are always another thing that you can always do to explore. You know it's kinda like
having an Echo or Siri or Google Assistant built in. There is an accessibility tab and that part did actually
kind of excite me, the fact that there's like a whole section in settings dedicated to accessibility. So, I tap on that. There's a couple things,
literally like a couple of things. So, there's vision mobility
and hearing, right? I hope this continues to expand.

Color correction, so I
think the default here is medium for text size, but
I have it set to largest. It's gonna require a restart if I do that. So, I'm gonna avoid doing it right now. I know this platform is still fairly new, but there are improvements
that can definitely be made with the accessibility options
that are currently available. I imagine being able to
just zoom in into the screen at any point, kinda like what
I could with my phone, right? Where I'm able to just zoom
in into the screen, right? Like that's so beneficial.

I can do this with my Mac. That's how I edit this video. And having things being
able to read aloud to me is also important. You know, blind folks, we
like auditory feedback. Controller, you can change the
intensity of the vibration. For me, as someone with
a visual impairment, it's just another way for
my brain to receive feedback that something is happening. And then hearing, mono, and you can change the audio balance, pretty standard. So, that is a look at sort
of the accessibility options. Limited, yes. Progress, it's a start. One of the games I wanted
to check out was ping-pong, 'cause I am bad at ping-pong. IRL tennis is out of the question for me, but maybe, just maybe virtual table tennis is where I'll paddle through. That was a bad joke. So, am I able to
experience virtual reality with my blindness? It's not a straight answer. So, let me just show you exactly. Alright. Position yourself. So, I can kind of read this
and then I can get closer. Thank you. Already beating Beat Saber at this. Please touch the floor. Oh. Cool. All right.

So, there's sort of like this path that's being shown with the light color. I wish it didn't contrast so much with the actual golf course. I mean, can I see the flag out there? See, they should just have

The haptics are well programmed into scale for an immersive experience. The colors of the user
