Alex Fortey here. The Art of Simple Golf
with my very good friend and golf genius Shawn Clement. Now, we've been here
shooting a few videos today. And we've got a
doozy for you today. A lot of you want
tweaks for more power. I get emails, literally, every
day asking for more power. But it's not as difficult
as you may think. And you know, we
hear these buzzwords about getting more lag and
all that kind of stuff. But we're gonna show
you something today that is gonna stop you
sabotaging your lag, because nearly every single
one of you, whether you're in your 50s, 60s,
70s in your 20s, whether you're playing off 5
or 25, pretty much all of you are sabotaging your lag. And lag is important, because– Well, it's part of what
happens when you stay on task, the task of not
hitting the ball, but the task of sending
a ball to a target.
The thing is when
we try and get lag, that's when we screw it up. Well, what happen–
you know, for someone who's been playing for 20
years and has been going after the ball for 20 years
and their dominant hand is their right
hand, they'll always have a tendency to take
control with the right hand. That's how the brain's wired. But then, when we take
the club and we put it in the lead hand– go ahead. Put your club in your
lead hand here, Alex. Now, let's say you wanted
to cut through this tee with your lead hand. Go ahead. Now, you guys'll notice
that the lag on that was pretty spectacular, right? You're not going to
force the club backwards and try to hit the tee from
behind with that lead hand. No, I'm not gonna try and sort
of over exaggerate it either. That's right. And I'm not gonna try
and flip down here. Correct. I'm just gonna allow
that to gather.
Look at that. You just decapitated
the tee perfectly. So I take that student and I
put the club in their lead hand. And I allow them to feel that. And we do a couple
of wiffle ball shots. What do you mean by that? Well, we could do a
normal golf ball here. So if you were gonna hit– you know, cut through the tee
with the ball on it, go ahead. OK. You'll notice that you'll have
to close the face a bit more. So I'm just hitting
this with one hand? Yeah. Pressure's on. So cut through the tee
with that lead hand again. How much of a backswing
do you want me to do? How much do you want? Awesome. Now, notice how you went
all the way through. Now, after you hit a
few shots like that, I'm gonna ask you to put
the right hand on and allow the right hand and the
right arm to position itself in a way that would not
sabotage what you just did.
OK. The right hand would then
be along for the ride and not take control
of the swing. So not to do this. To hit at the balls. Well, that's the thing. So if you allow the right
hand, your dominant hand, to take control of
your swing again, then that's where you'll
go after that golf ball.
It's like a squirrel, right? There's the squirrel. So do a practice swing
with your lead hand only. Good. Now, put your right
hand on and feel like it's a lead hand
dominated swing completely. So the same swing– Same swing with the lead hand. And feel how that right
hand is along for the ride. It's not detaching
itself from the grip.
No, it's being sort of
pulled along almost. But you'll notice
that you'll have to create space for that right
hand and that right elbow now. If the right arm hits
the side of your body, you can't get through with
that left hand anymore. Now, you're gonna have to make
all kinds of compensations to get there. So where do you
feel you need to be at address for the right hand
to be part of that party? So you're going to– You have to allow
more room here. Exactly. So now, when you come through
with the lead hand again, do you feel like the right
arm and hand is in a position to follow– Yes. And to allow it to do its task? This is how we can be
our own coaches, really. That's it. This is how you can
dial yourself in. Exactly. So there's the left arm feel. Great. Now, the right arm. Does it feel like it
can follow that path? Do a rehearsal above the
ball with that right hand on. That's it. Did it feel like your right arm
was able to follow that lead? Absolutely Beautiful.
So then, make this a
completely dominated left side. Awesome. And this man can swing
a club, you guys. Beautiful. Beautiful swing. So that's basically
all they need to do. Take some left-handed swings. Cause left-handed, you
can't lose your lag. That's the cool part. So now, you've got that. You start becoming
aware of what's happening with that lead hand. And film yourself. You'll notice, wow,
that's amazing lag. So you'd never force it this
way, the arms falling through. Then, you put your
right hand on it and you allow the
same thing to occur and you say, whoa, I've
never been there before. That's the first
thing you'll say. But here's the thing. It's not about trying
to get to there. No. Yeah. It's just allowing the
lead hand to do the work. To pull you through. Exactly. There you go people. Give that a try. And you will get
that natural lag. Yes. Better ball striking and a lot
more freedom in your swing. As a tidbit, when
you lag more, you're gonna need a stronger grip.
You're gonna need a little
more closed faced to allow you, because if the
face is too neutral and you're lagging more, that
face is gonna end up open. Then, the brain's gonna
go, well, wait a second. I've got to fix that. And now, you've
lost the lag again, because the face was too open. Yeah, so if you do notice you're
leaking a few to the right, but still feeling like it's
a pretty decent strike, you might notice a
huge improvement, just by closing the club
face, regrouping it a bit, so when you collect it, it's
gonna sling around perfectly. If you feel the need
to square it up, it's too open to begin with.
There you are, people. Some really good
value for you there. That's gonna help you so much. Look forward to you next time. [MUSIC PLAYING] .
