I'm at Bali National Golf Club. This is
the 11th hole. It's a beautiful hole. You can see down here. And
if I was playing this hole, I would want to hit a shot. At the moment I have to fly it about 200
meters over the bunkers to be able to get to the fairway. So, I'd want to
be hitting the wall pretty solidly. Now we've been contacted at our
Search 4 Scratch Program by Robert. And Robert is playing off 17 and
wants to get down lower than that.
Quite a bit lower than that. And he described his problem as an over the top
swing where when he wants to hit it a long way, he gets more and moreover the top and
swings across the ball or slices across it. And it leads to a lack of distance. And ofcourse it also leads to a
lack of confidence. So, Robert, I hear what you're saying. We get a lot of people that
do similar things to that. So I have a driver here in my hands
to just demonstrate what you're expressing that you're doing and
then what you can do differently. So let me explain a little bit about the
interesting psychology behind this kind of swing. So, when the golf ball
is on the ground to the side of us, like it is in golf, Robert, and we
swing somewhere to the top of the swing.
My brain knows that the ball is over here. So what my brain does is very naturally
moves my hands towards the golf ball, because my impulse is
to hit the golf ball. So I want you to think about this for
a second. It's like, this is called A, and that's called B. All right. And the problem with that is there's no
C there's no end of the swing because this becomes the end of the
swing. So, I swing to the top. I'm over here somewhere. And I'm
thinking I've got to hit that ball. And my hands, the first thing they do,
my brain moves my hands to the ball.
Guess what happens? The club
starts to release very early. And if my hands are moving towards
the ball, which is over there, then the club is going to swing
out and in front of you too much. When it swings out in front of you too
much, it's going to swing down too much, and across the ball too much. And
that's going to pose a problem. That's the sort of thing
you're talking about. So, the first problem we have is the impulse
to hit the ball propels the club too much in front of you.
Alright. So how
are we going to change that? Well, here's what we've got to
do. First things first. When the golf club is
at the top of the swing, what we've got to be able to do from
there, Robert, is we've got to be able to understand that the end of the swing
is not there, where the ball is, but its the golf club finishing
over your shoulder over here. So let me do that again. So I'm
standing here like this. This becomes A, and this becomes B and the ball
gets in the middle of the A and the B.
It's at the bottom
there, it gets in the way. So what we're doing is removing
the impulse to hit the golf ball. That's number one. Very
important. A, over here somewhere, B over here somewhere. So that should
make sense to you that this is not… So what you're doing is you've
got, A, here and B here, which means that somewhere
about halfway along, all the accelerations are
occurring in the golf swing. And the trouble with the acceleration
is that the club is excelling outwards away from you. And that's
not what we want to do. So there's gotta be another way to do it. So I'll turn this way so you can see
what it looks like from this side. So remember, A is over
here somewhere and then B over here somewhere. Okay. Now what we're dealing with here is
hand path. Let me say that again. The golf club's at the top of the
swing, and we're dealing with the path of the hands. If there is
an impulse to hit that ball, the hand path is going outwards first,
downward second.
Outwards first, downwards second. We've got to change
that sequence or that code in the brain. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to swing the golf club to
the top of the swing and you'll see my hands are resting somewhere
over my right shoulder here. Now here's the move down. This
is the master move in golf, the handle of the golf club.
And particularly this end, the cap end of the club
moves under my body, under my shoulders coming down. I
want you to see what I did there. So instead of the hand path, moving out
towards the ball and down, my hand path, the handle here, which is leading
my hands, moves under my shoulders.
Now, if I make that move and move
it under my shoulders, Robert, the golf club releases out
later. It still moves outwards, but it goes downwards first. So it goes down then out then forward
through the ball. That's three dimensions. Where you're going outwards and
downwards and then left this way. And that's what you're doing. And I
know you don't want to do that anymore, but this method will help you. So
top of the golf swing, the handle, and the hands move under the shoulders,
my shoulders, my front shoulder here, my hands move under my shoulders this way. And the golf club moves out as
a secondary motion, this way. So the hands went down, club goes out. So now the club is actually
moving on an inside to out path, more or less this way, and then
straight back through and up here.
So that's the key move in
the golf swing. Robert, that's different to what you're doing, and that will change the
puttening in your swing. It'll take a little bit of work, and I wouldn't suggest you do
it with a driver to start with, I'd start with some short irons
and build some confidence. But the only thought is, you've got
to have the top thats, A's up here, B's at the finish and that the hands
start down under the shoulders.
And I guarantee you, if you do this,
Robert, you'll see a big difference. So I'll hit a shot for
you now with this driver. And I'll just focus on my hands,
moving more or less underneath me. [Inaudible]. Just like that. So, top of the swing, hands went down underneath my
body, back out in front. Robert, do some practice on that. You'll find that it's going to make
a tremendous amount of difference. You're going to need probably
three months of work, practicing to get the puttening to change
because you've probably been doing it for time. Once you start to lose the impulse to
hit the ball and to trust your swing, to go all the way to this
finish place over here, you're going to hit better shots.
