I think my teacher nailed it the best, when I told him I bought a 400,000 km Golf. He said, "WHY?!" Hey guys, and welcome to the Chill Garage! My name is Nico and in today's video I'm revealing my new project car. It's the 2002 Volkswagen Golf. A car that everybody knows. If you have never seen one, you are either blind or have been in prison since 1996. If you are both, I am so sorry. The Golf MK4 is a very common car, especially with beginner car YouTubers. However, this is not a GTI – which makes this mundane little car a bit more special. No. Definitely not – but it is a bit more special to me than most Golfs – because my uncle bought it new in 2002, on the 8th of August at 2 PM. Very precise and very typical of him. That preciseness is part of the reason why this car is still pretty solid. My godmother bought this car from him in 2005 and has been driving it since. When I sold my Volvo C70 Coupé a few years ago to afford studying, my godmother had started planning.

I asked her if she wanted to sell the Golf to me. I figured my budget was tight, the Golf wasn't going to break the bank and I knew its history since new. For that money, I could only get a shitbox with high mileage and unknown problems. So I thought it would be better to get a shitbox with high mileage and -known- problems. I test drove a few cars and they were all shot – from dead clutches to having all the windows closed with blocks of wood and tape I decided a thousand euro car wasn't going to do it.

So I asked my godmother if she wanted to sell the car to me. She said sure, and it's going to be very cheap. With a clever smirk. Turns out, she wanted to give the car for free. I was so grateful and happy, because it was the perfect car for my situation. I finally I got the call that I'm free to pick up the car. So I bought a train ticket – hoping I wouldn't have to buy an another to get back home. Someone might think it's quite the adventure to travel almost 1200 kilometers to pick up a free car, and it certainly was. I took a taxi to the station, hopped in the train at 7 AM and travelled 400 kilometers to Kemi. Then I took my uncle's friends car that was in service there, and drove it for an another 200 km. The next noon, my godmother got her new car and we filled the paperwork for both cars. During first test drive I noticed there was an issue with the door locks.

When you open the locks, step in the driver's seat and turn the ignition on, they lock themselves. When you start the car, the locks open, and close again when you start moving. That's something I will definitely need to sort out. That's annoying and I could potentially get locked out of the car. The locks going crazy on their own could also drain the battery eventually. After that I checked all the fluids and turns out the oil was all black and under the minimum line. Way past it's service interval. The oils were changed asap and I decided to look into some other issues that I already knew about.

More about them in the next video. Thanks for watching and welcome to The Chill Garage!.
