PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 0:06 Before you came for coaching, where were you at with your golf? What were you feeling like? Simon Schubert 0:11 Yeah, I was just feeling like I was a fairly, fairly ordinary golfer. Hitting sort of around the 110 to 115 mark. That's where I was at at the time PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 0:24 And you were doing practice? Simon Schubert 0:24 Plenty of practice. Not really. I was, I was practising but it was really I wasn't practising any putting or chipping or any of that part of the game. I was just getting to the driving range and try to smack big hits with a with the driver. PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 0:38 It wasn't really improving your scores to much? Simon Schubert 0:40 It wasn't improving whatsoever! Okay, so around that 110 115, so then you come along and got some coaching and we went to the 10 weeks in 10 shots program? Initially, I actually saw you down the driving range and you asked me what I wanted to work on and it was initially my chip shots which i'd been hitting them thin and all this sort of stuff and you worked on that with me and I found instant improvement in my game just from that one lesson, and that sort of set me on the path to start to want more lessons.
PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 1:18 And so then you joined the longer term coaching programme, basically and then what did you find that helped you with? Simon Schubert 1:27 Just making me realise that all the practice I was doing was a waste of time. I was practising to be pathetic, you know what I mean, really, well I mean it's true. And I actually found it probably more difficult to get get back onto the right path, because, you know, i'd practiced to be bad at it, really, PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 1:48 I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you because I think anyone who's ever played the game has been through that including Golf Pro's. We've realised wow we've wasted a lot of time practising what we used to think was right. Trying to perfect the golf swing or trying to get everything just right and then our golf game would be perfect and it's just not like that.
So what are the kinds of things that stood out for you in the coaching in terms of the way you practice? Simon Schubert 2:11 I guess the main thing that really stood out. You know the short game how important the short game is particularly the putting which is the difference. I guess it's sort of the boring side of the practice sort ofbthings but, it's, dead set, probably one of the most important parts of the whole game. That's where you're going to initially get it. I think look at the guys behind me, professionals almost, and that's what they do. They spend 80% of their time around that chipping pithching and putting. PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 2:46 That's the beauty of these purposeful practice sessions. Here you are somebody who's shooting in the 90s playing and training with some trainee golf pros who shoot in the 70s, and then you can really see what's actually required to get to that.
It's not rocket science they're just doing stuff that's scaled up and harder than what you're doing but it's the same kind of game. Simon Schubert 3:05 The funny thing a little bit too for me is that that you know I'm starting to get quite good at that, and I feel like I can always compare myself. Not really but like in certain ways I'm sort of close in maybe my putting and that but i'm miles away in the longer game but that's where I can still improve myself really quickly. PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 3:25 And so where's the scores now, after having done this for a good few months? Simon Schubert 3:29 So my best game ever still is that 90.
I'm getting an average sort of 93's to 94's. Like the low 90s now. PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 3:38 Fantastic! Pretty happy with that? Simon Schubert 3:40 It's an improvement of between 15 to 20 pretty much. PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 3:46 You seem pretty happy with that? Simon Schubert 3:48 Yeah. I don't go out and get so frustrated anymore like I used to go out and just be angry all the time and that sort of stuff now I can go out and have a good game. I might still have a couple of pretty crap holes but you feel like you had a good game. Enjoyed it rather than sort of looking forward to the 19th! PAUL WILLIAMSON GOLF 4:04 That's awesome! Thank you Simon.
Cheers..
