– How do they best players
in the world get into this really powerful impact position like Piers where they're really open
through the golf ball? Well today we're gonna show
you exactly how they do it to help you with your game. – Yes we're gonna be showing
you how to use the ground to get more power. Hi, we're your coaches Piers
and Andy from Me and My Golf, and if you wanna get
more power in your game, hit the subscribe button and
also hit the notification bell. – So this is something where
we see the best players in the world, they're all
generally open on impact. We have a lot of hip
rotation, hips facing forward, even the upper body's opening as well.
But why do we want to do this? What's it going to do for our golf? – Well look, you know
what, it's gonna give you more speed, it's gonna help
with your ball striking, it's even gonna help with
the club face control through the hitting area
but here's the warning. Please don't try and open out your hips more on your downswing if
when you are swinging down, your club face is excessively open, causing you to hit the
golf ball to the right. Or you're swinging over the top, again, trying to open the hips
is going to exaggerate this problem, or even if you're
just slicing the golf ball, do not try and open your hips.
Make sure that you can get
the club face under control, get it squarer, get the club
shaft on a shallower plane on the way down, once
you do those two things, then you can put those hips into the shot but also, this is quite
difficult isn't it, but also you do need some
mobility in this lower body to be able to open those hips as well. – It's good to have a
little bit of awareness of how you actually
move those hips as well. Okay, well before we get into some drills – Yes.
– And some sort of thoughts on this, let's take a
look at this video here of this guy on ice, he's gonna
give you an understanding of what we do because we're really gonna pay attention to the ground. Now if we take a look at that again now, take a look at his lower
body, what do his feet do? You'll notice as he sort of falls over, his right foot goes back and
his left foot goes forward and this is really gonna help
you understand really how we use the ground because the
ground is the key thing when we're talking about how we
rotate and open the hips Piers.
– I hope he's okay! (both laugh) I hope he made it okay. Do you think he made par? – I'm glad it was him and not me. (Piers laughs) Okay, well look, let's just
explain what's going on there and then how this is gonna
help us create some hip turn. – Yeah, and look one thing
that I think we would say with this is, not many people
think about the ground, you know, there's more and
more research out there to show you but not many
people think about the ground when it comes to opening
the hips but basically what happens as you could see
by the golfer on ice there, what's happening is as I
swing down, my right foot is pushing back away from the golf ball so it's pushing back
away from the golf ball which is actually then
pushing my hip forward and my left foot is pushing
towards the golf ball which then causes my left
hip to push backwards away from that so it's almost
the pushing into the ground and then traction that
we get from the ground pushes us back in the opposite direction.
– Exactly, so that right
foot being pushed this way, the ground pushes back
this way towards us, really pushing the hip
forward, and then the opposite where that one foot pushes
forward actually pushes back so that helps Piers now
get into this position but it's really going from the feet up, it's really going from the
ground whereas Piers mentioned, a lot of people from the
top of the golf swing are maybe thinking a little
bit more about the hips and how to create these
instead of going well, let's start at the ground. – Yeah, and look, that
can work and sometimes you thinking about the
hips makes the feet work differently but sometimes, like Andy said, if you can start at the ground
then it's gonna be better. – Great example here, take a look at this. Collin Morikawa, we were lucky
enough to spend some time with him, unbelievable
talent, great golfer on the PGA tour, look how
much he opens his body, look how he uses the ground. This is one of the key
components for him that helps him really control his ball
fly with his irons, but an unbelievable golfer
Piers, and certainly laser like irons which
we'd all love to have.
– And very slight, very small,
but he hits the ball a mile and this is obviously one of the reasons. – Okay, well let's go through some. What we wanna do with this
is create some awareness, some feelings for you that
you can take to the range or do at home or on the golf
course that's gonna help you create some feeling of the
ground because this is they key thing, let's go through the
first sort of drill then Piers. – Yeah.
– [Andy] So maybe just something to set up first.
– Yeah, absolutely, I
think we mentioned earlier about you gotta have the
mobility so in the setup, if I can get my left foot
and flare it out it's gonna allow me to open out my hips more. If I have it square on, it's
gonna be a little bit harder, there's a block there so it
just allows for more mobility by doing it that way. Now as you mentioned Andy,
we want to create feels with this, these drills
aren't necessarily for hitting golf balls, they're
more for creating feels. So hands and arms across your
shoulders in golf posture, really good wind up but
then as we swing back, what you're gonna do is
you're gonna lift the toes on your trail foot and the
heel on your lead foot. And then as you start your
downswing, without moving your upper body bang,
you're gonna push your feet back into the ground. That's you using the
ground and trying to get that pushing force into the ground and it's a really nice
way of understanding how to kickstart the
lower body without moving the upper body too much.
– Do that one more time,
I love this because as, watch what happens. Everything's pushing back,
pushing forward now here. Everything's coming forward,
everything's going back here. He's getting that pushing
effect that he really needs to create and use that ground. – Bit of a workout!
(laughs) – The great thing about this, I think is that when you do these drills,
I know when I do them Piers, I really feel very powerful.
– Yes. – Because I'm really
engaged, I'm using the ground to create some torque,
to create some sort of traction in it here. – Yeah, I totally agree, totally agree. And obviously because this
is a power video, Andy, that ball's teed up a little bit higher but I'm gonna get that same
sensation when I'm hitting this golf shot.
(ting) That was pretty decent, wasn't it? That one, that's gonna go. – You know what, if
that's in warm up ones, yeah none of them were like that actually. (Piers laughs) None of them were like that. – The top there as well which was good. – There was a top there actually. Right okay, let's go with, I tell you, I was really impressed by that one, Piers. – You impressed by that,
were you scared by that? – I'm scared by that one, right.
– The ground is shaking. – Let's go through the next drill then. – Okay, so this is actually
a drill that you've done with an old coach of yours,
a guy called Dave Ridley, and it's called centered
knees, and I'm actually gonna get you in here to help you
because I think it works well when you've got two people doing this. – One of my favorites,
this is, because it really helps you feel the ground. So, you're gonna notice
this on a lot of the best players in the world as
well, as we go to the top of the golf swing here,
I've asked Piers to sort of just leave his arms and
his upper body there, but you can see he's rotated
his hips on the way back. All we're gonna ask him to
do now is to actually center these knees, there you go,
center the knees without really moving the upper body too much.
This is going to create a bit of a stretch but the great thing about
this, you cannot help now but use the ground in order
to center those knees. Piers can feel that a
lot as you're getting a little bit older. – I'll need a shower after this video! – So it's a great feeling
for you to get that. I really love this drill
and every time I do this, I feel like I'm gonna hit it
like ten, 15 yards further. – I thought you were
gonna say you feel like you hit it like Piers. – No, I said further. – Okay, sorry yeah. – Okay, right, let's see
(Piers laughs) if we can get these centered knees. Just one quick one
actually, one observation, something you're gonna
notice on a lot of the best players in the world, as
they do this you're gonna see they center their knees and
their hips get pretty square before this lead arm gets
parallel with the ground or around that same point, they're really using that
ground early in the downswing.
(Piers exhales) – Come on, feel like I'm doing a- – Piers you can't improve on the last one. – I can't really, can I? That was actually really good. Okay, same sensation though
in that centered knees. (ting) – You sure about that? Wow, what's going on, what
have you done with Piers? – It must have warmed me
up tho because normally it takes a little bit longer than this.
– Three in a row is gonna
be hard to do but we got one more drill. – Yeah, absolutely, this
is actually something that we saw from a good friend of ours and one of the best golf
coaches in our opinion, in the world, Mark Blackburn,
don't tell him we said that, so he works with a lot of tall players. He works with Kevin
Chapel and this is a drill that he does with Kevin Chapel. Takes a little bit of sorting out. And with Kevin Chapel he
actually hits golf balls but we don't recommend
that you do this yourself and all we're looking to do
is, with this alignment stick behind my left foot, my lead foot, is that when I get to the
top I'm gonna start down obviously by pushing into
the ground but as I push into my left foot, the
ground is then gonna pop that foot over the stick so it looks a little bit like this.
So swing back down, and
that left foot you can see, oh hello, is just hopping over the stick. And you could do this maybe with an iron when you get used to it. Don't recommend doing it with a driver because you might cause a few sky marks. – I really hope he slips
over on this next one. (Piers laughs) But the great thing about
this, in order to get this left foot going back, he needs to push forward which is exactly what we're talking about, that's the ice shot
that we saw that guy do. – Yeah, absolutely. – So yeah, we're just
gonna hit this one now, he's gotta-
– One more yet. – Three in a row. – Think of the long drive
guys as well, and girls, you know, Kyle Berkshire,
Berkshire, Berkshire, whatever it is pronounced,
the H not so good on that one but think about what he
does with that left foot. It really fires down
behind him as well so.
– Matthew Wolf as well,
someone who does this without, not even in a drill, he does this with his driver where
he's using that ground, obviously a long hitter as well. – All long hitters get
rid of that bug there otherwise he's gonna go for a, I can't, that's one thing actually, if there's a bug on the
ball, I can't hit it. I feel like I'm committing a crime. – Okay right, come on
then, three in a row. – All right, here we go. – I'd like to see this. (ting) – That one was the worst one. – Oh he's let me down, he's let me down. The pressure got to him. – It felt like I tried to hit that one a little bit harder but
do you know what happened, I didn't tee it high enough. – It was too low, it was far too low! – It was too low. – It was far too low.
Guys hope you enjoyed
that, some really important things there that helps
you create some awareness of really, yes, we wanna
be more open through the golf ball, things need to be in place, but how we use the ground
is massively gonna help that so make sure you give those drills a go on the reigns the next time you're there. Also if you want some more
