should you be using a hybrid or a long iron well
today we're going to help you find what suits you   yes plus we're going to show you how to use those
clubs hello everybody and welcome to me and my   golf we're your coaches andy and pierce now if
you are looking to improve your game you're at the   right channel so make sure you hit that subscribe
and hit the notification bell so you don't miss   a video now long line hybrid what should we use
well today we're going to clear it up this is a   question that we get us all the time pierce what
should we use well look it really does depend on   the person so obviously that's what we're going
to be going through today so let's just look at   the technology first of all so three iron versus
that hybrid now if we look at the hybrid there's   obviously a big difference straight away to the
eye and we can see it's got a very large sole   that suggests that it's going to be better
at interacting with the ground potentially   less digging into the ground and also you can
see as a result of this you can have a lot more   center of gravity below the golf ball which means
we could get more height other thing another good   feature with the hybrid is that it's i've got a
very forgiving face so the ball will come off the   face faster on those off-center hits it sounds
like we're really selling the hybrid but as we   said it really does depend now the good thing with
these clubs is the technique is actually the same   so we want to achieve the same technique the
same sort of setup as we hit the shot so let's   just go through this so first of all we need to
understand this is a really big question we get   asked when you're hitting the golf ball we want to
be having a descending blow when we hit the golf   ball it's not like a drive where we hit on the way
up it's the same as every other iron we want to be   hitting the golf ball and then bottoming out after
the golf ball to get the purest strike because   obviously look we're on the fairway that's the
main thing let's go with the ball position first   of all so what we want to do is get it forward in
the stance but not as far forward as the driver so   simply put we want to get a club head inside
the lead heel that's a perfect measure for you   to gauge that ball position from there you can
either go 50 50 in your weight distribution   or you can be ever so slightly on your lead
side that helps us get that descending blow   and then in your practice swings we want to feel
as though we get a brush you can hear that brush   as i'm hitting the ground there so a brush and
then when we hit the shot the main thing from   there is that we just want to be able to stick
that finish i think andy we get a lot of golfers   because it's a long club they wanted it hard and
they start losing balance if you can brush the   ground and stick your finish you're gonna get
the best out of the shot definitely not having   not just trying to smack it maybe just swinging
within a sort of pace that you can handle and just   focusing on good balance i think is really key
okay well very simple that's how we play the long   line and the hybrid from the technique side of
things let's look at the performance and actually   compare them head to head longline versus hybrid
see what they do we've got the flight scope here   we're going to take a look at the data and
actually understand the difference between those   two designs okay so three iron first let's just
go through that setup as we did i suppose i better   have my practice swing handy and make sure i get
that brush okay all right interesting to see what   it's gonna do a little bit of breeze around here
at the aspirin so that could play a role in this oh it's nice i mean look at that
one a beautiful shot actually pierce   really nice shot okay let's have a look at
the numbers there right again it is into the   breeze there but let's look at the key numbers
it's got 185.6 yards again there's that breeze   it's got 95 feet height okay and the descent
angle so the angle that the ball is coming down   the is 48.4 degrees okay okay so reasonable there
pierce let's take a look then and just go head to   head versus the hybrid here and see what we've
got the wind would definitely have affected that   shot from the land angle and things like that
and the height handy but obviously it's going   to affect the hybrid exactly the same exactly
it's going to be a fair test okay let's see   what the hybrid does so we will see a difference
on this and then we can sort of take a look and   see how this is going to apply to you okay exactly
the same setup exactly the same swing thoughts slight difference in height there andy i
actually lost it piers i didn't i didn't even   see the height how's your neck okay nice shot so
so let's look at the difference in this a massive   difference so first of all it was 131 feet high
so massive difference compared to 95 the descent   angle here was 52.3 so slightly steeper steeper
again we talked about that and the actual yardage   was 189 so slightly slightly further yes slightly
further so yeah you can see three main differences   there we've got the height we've got the distance
or the carry distance and we've also got that land   angle as well so this can all go into the decision
making process for yourself exactly now the first   thing you need to think about actually before
you make that decision there's a few other things   you need to consider the first thing is speed now
speed is going to play a big role in this because   if you're a low speed player then you need that
golf ball to get airborne so if you are somebody   who swings the club at a lower speed then a hybrid
is probably going to be a good thing for you to go   to get that ball carrying and actually getting
a little bit further that's really what that's   designed for if you're a high speed player then
you don't generally have too much trouble hitting   the golf ball in the air because we create plenty
of spin excuse me so make sure that your you think   and bear in mind the speed that you actually swing
the golf club that's going to play a big part the   next thing is the golf course that you play on now
if you play a golf course where there's lots of   approaches where you've actually got bunkers and
danger in front of the the green well we know that   you're not going to be able to run a long iron in
there so a hybrid is going to give you that carry   and get the golf ball coming down over and landing
a lot softer than a long iron would be so that   needs to play a part in it as well if you play
a lynx golf course now this is going to be a big   factor if you play a windy lynx golf course
a hybrid might not be the best decision   because if you get the golf ball in the
air the wind's going to affect it more   having a low ball flight where it can run a little
more is certainly going to help so bear that in   mind think about the golf course that you play
and the conditions of the golf course and then   the last thing is the height that you hit it are
you somebody who hits the golf ball really high   or really low if you hit it really low then maybe
an option is the hybrid if you hit it really high   then maybe an option is sticking with a long
line so hopefully that's give you a bit of   an insight of really what you should be using
based on you and based on the golf course and   the conditions that you play on what we're going
to do now is really talk through this one pierce   it's hit two clubs here i want to know what
you're going to use in this situation what   would you what's your scenario you know what
it's interesting because the the three-iron   was a really good shot but it's on the front edge
of the green the hybrid is actually a better shot   as far as the results concerned it's probably only
about six seven feet from the flag but the thing   i think i would struggle with generally speaking
in this wind is hitting the hybrid hitting it   that high 130 feet in this wind it would be a
problem but this is something that you can look at   look at someone like rory and dj they actually
put the hybrid in play for specific golf courses   again they were thinking about the carry that they
had to make but i think because it's into the wind   because i've got the speed as well i can control
the ball flight with a three iron exactly so again   my man that's the thing so pierce is taking into
account the conditions and the speed that he would   normally so three irons the club for him he's
under pressure now can he get it on the green   shot today i want to take the first one the
first one's on the green that's all that matters it felt a little high on the face maybe a little
heaviest making the journey though i think   it's got that front edge a little explosion
on the ground on that a little west we've   had a lot of rain here andy not your best
strike pierce but it's up there on the green   and that's what pierce will be using so i
hope that's give you a clearer idea of what   you should be using a hybrid or a long line
